Indeterminate varieties benefit tremendously from pruning. Without intervention, they become tangled jungles that collapse under their own weight despite staking.
Check seed packets or plant labels to determine which type you're growing. If you started from seed, the variety description usually specifies growth habit.
Understanding Suckers
The primary target of tomato pruning is suckers, the shoots that develop in the junction between the main stem and a branch. Look for the V where a leaf stem meets the main trunk. That little shoot emerging from the V is a sucker.
Left alone, each sucker grows into a full-sized branch producing its own leaves, flowers, and fruits. This sounds great until you realize that indeterminate tomatoes produce dozens of suckers throughout the season. Let them all grow, and you'll have an unmanageable, disease-prone tangle.
Suckers aren't inherently bad. In fact, they're identical to the main stem in their growth potential. The question is how many productive stems your space, support system, and management capacity can handle.
Basic Pruning Method for Indeterminates
The most common pruning approach for indeterminate tomatoes creates a single main stem by removing all suckers. Here's how it works:
Start early, when plants are young and suckers are small. Small suckers break off easily with your fingers, while large ones require pruners and leave wounds that invite disease.
Inspect plants weekly throughout the growing season. Suckers grow quickly, what wasn't there yesterday might be 6 inches long tomorrow.
Remove suckers by pinching them off with your thumb and forefinger when they're 2 to 4 inches long. Grasp the sucker at its base and bend it sharply sideways. It should snap off cleanly.
For larger suckers that don't snap easily, use clean, sharp pruners. Make cuts close to the main stem without gouging it. Disinfect pruners between plants with rubbing alcohol or a 10 percent bleach solution to prevent disease spread.
Focus on lower suckers first. Suckers below the first fruit cluster contribute little to production and tend to trail on the ground, increasing disease risk. Remove these religiously.
Consider leaving upper suckers if your plant is very vigorous and you have adequate support. Some gardeners train two or three main stems rather than just one, increasing total production if conditions allow.
The Two-Stem Method
Instead of a single stem, you can prune tomatoes to two or three main stems. This approach increases total yield but requires stronger support.
Allow the first sucker below the first flower cluster to develop into a second main stem. Train each stem up its own support, keeping them separate.
Remove all other suckers, maintaining just these two (or three) main stems throughout the season.
Two-stem pruning works well when you have limited space but want maximum production. The plant footprint stays manageable while fruit production nearly doubles.
Leaf Pruning
Beyond suckers, you might prune leaves in certain situations.
Bottom leaves that touch the ground should be removed. These are highways for soil-borne diseases to splash onto the plant during watering or rain. Once plants are well-established with fruit setting, I remove all foliage below the lowest fruit cluster.
Diseased leaves need immediate removal regardless of plant stage. Don't wait, early removal limits disease spread.
Yellowing leaves contribute nothing to the plant and can be removed to improve air circulation.
Excessive foliage might need thinning if plants are so dense that air circulation suffers. However, be conservative, leaves produce the energy that creates and ripens fruit.
Never remove more than 25 to 30 percent of the plant's foliage at once. Aggressive pruning shocks plants and slows fruit development.
Top Pruning
In late summer, about four to six weeks before your first expected fall frost, top your indeterminate plants. This means cutting off the growing tip of the main stem(s).
Topping stops vertical growth and redirects energy toward ripening existing fruits rather than producing new flowers. Since new fruits won't have time to mature before frost anyway, topping ensures you get maximum yield from fruits already set.
Cut just above a leaf cluster, leaving at least four or five productive fruit clusters on the plant. Make the cut clean and straight with sharp pruners.
Some gardeners also remove any flowers present when topping, as these have no chance of maturing into harvestable fruit.
Timing and Technique
Time of day matters. Prune in the morning after dew has dried but before the day's heat peaks. Morning pruning allows wounds to dry quickly, reducing infection risk. Plant stress is lowest in the morning before temperatures rise.
Weather conditions influence pruning timing. Avoid pruning before rain, which keeps wounds wet and vulnerable to disease. Similarly, don't prune during extremely hot weather, which stresses plants.
Clean tools prevent disease spread. Disinfect pruners between plants or at minimum between varieties. A spray bottle of rubbing alcohol makes this easy, just spritz the blades and wipe dry.
Wash hands regularly, especially if you handle plants with visible disease. Many tomato diseases spread mechanically through contact.
Common Pruning Mistakes
Aggressive pruning tops the list of mistakes. Removing too much foliage at once or pruning too severely shocks plants and reduces yields. Remember that leaves produce the sugars that create tomato flavor.
Ignoring plant type leads to disappointed gardeners who aggressively prune determinate varieties and wonder why yields are terrible. Match pruning intensity to plant type.
Irregular attention creates problems. If you forget about pruning for two weeks, you'll face large suckers that leave significant wounds when removed. Consistent weekly attention keeps the task easy and plants healthy.
Pruning wet plants spreads disease. Always wait for foliage to dry completely.
Leaving stubs when removing suckers invites rot and disease. Remove suckers completely at their base.
Alternatives to Pruning
Some gardeners practice minimal or no pruning with excellent results. This approach works particularly well if you have abundant space and strong support systems.
Instead of removing suckers, train them along horizontal supports or weave them through cage openings. The result is a larger, bushier plant producing more total fruit, though individual fruits may be smaller than on pruned plants.
This method requires strong support structures, a single tomato cage won't cut it. Think substantial stakes with horizontal wires or large custom-built cages.
No-prune approaches work best in dry climates where fungal disease pressure is lower. In humid regions, dense foliage creates too much disease risk.
Supporting Pruned Plants
Pruning creates a taller, narrower plant that needs solid support. Single-stem pruning can produce plants 7 to 8 feet tall or more.
Sturdy stakes at least 6 feet tall work well for single-stem plants. Drive stakes 12 inches into the ground for stability. Use soft ties (old T-shirt strips work great) to attach the main stem to the stake as it grows. Tie loosely to avoid constricting stem growth.
Florida weave is a staking system where stakes are placed between every two to three plants. Twine runs along both sides of the row, weaving between stakes and holding plants upright. As plants grow, additional layers of twine are added every 8 to 10 inches.
Large cages work for lightly pruned plants but often aren't strong enough for heavily pruned, large heirlooms. If using cages, choose the largest, strongest ones available.
Whatever support system you choose, install it at planting time. Trying to stake or cage mature plants without damaging roots is nearly impossible.
Observing Results
Keep notes about your pruning practices and their results. Which plants produced best? How did pruning intensity affect fruit size and total yield? Did disease pressure differ between pruned and unpruned plants?
Your garden is your laboratory. Pruning recommendations are guidelines, not rigid rules. Experiment with different approaches and observe what works in your specific conditions.
Some varieties respond better to aggressive pruning than others. Vigorous growers can handle more pruning, while moderate growers might need lighter touch.
Your climate, soil fertility, and available space all influence optimal pruning strategy. Pay attention to plant performance and adjust accordingly.
