Container Watering Specifics

Self-watering containers have built-in reservoirs that reduce watering frequency. They work beautifully for maintaining consistent moisture.

Never let containers sit in water-filled saucers for extended periods. This waterlog soil and suffocates roots. Empty saucers after watering.

Adjusting for Weather

Hot, windy days increase water demand. Plants transpire more, drying soil faster. You might need to water more frequently.

Cool, cloudy weather reduces water needs. Slow transpiration means soil stays moist longer.

After heavy rain, skip irrigation. Check soil moisture before automatically watering.

In fall as temperatures cool and days shorten, plants need less water. Reduce watering frequency to match reduced demand.

Mulch as a Water Management Tool

Three inches of organic mulch moderates soil moisture dramatically. It reduces evaporation, keeps soil cooler, and maintains more consistent moisture levels.

Mulched soil needs less frequent watering than bare soil. The difference is substantial: maybe watering every 4 to 5 days instead of every 2 to 3 days.

Mulch also prevents soil from splashing onto leaves during watering, which reduces disease spread.

Dealing with Hydrophobic Soil

Very dry soil sometimes becomes hydrophobic: it repels water rather than absorbing it. You water, but water runs off the surface instead of soaking in.

Fix this by watering slowly, giving water time to penetrate. Or mix a drop of dish soap into a watering can (truly just a drop). The soap reduces surface tension, helping water soak in. Once soil is rewet, it will accept water normally.

When to Reduce Watering

Late in the season, reducing water can actually improve flavor in some crops. Slightly stressed tomato plants produce more concentrated, flavorful fruits.

Squash and melons develop better flavor when watered less as they ripen.

Onions and garlic should have water withheld a week or two before harvest to allow bulbs to cure properly.

Monitoring Soil Moisture

The finger test works: stick your finger into soil 2 to 3 inches deep. If it feels dry, water. If it feels moist, wait.

For more precision, inexpensive soil moisture meters provide readings at different depths. These help especially when learning what proper soil moisture feels like.

In containers, weight is a good indicator. Lift containers before and after watering to learn what dry versus wet feels like. A dry container is noticeably lighter.

While proper watering matters, building drought-resistant gardens reduces watering needs:

  • Mulch heavily to reduce evaporation
  • Choose drought-tolerant varieties when possible
  • Encourage deep root systems through proper watering practices
  • Provide shade during extreme heat

The goal isn't eliminating irrigation: it's creating systems that make the most of water you provide.

Getting watering right takes practice and attention. Every garden is different based on soil, climate, and what you're growing. Pay attention to how plants respond. Check soil moisture regularly. Adjust based on what you observe.
